What's coming with SQL Server 2012
0900 - Dave Dustin

This session will cover many of the new features being delivered in the next major version of SQL Server, previously codenamed Denali, now known as SQL Server 2012 including (but not limited to)

  • Changes and new features for the DB engine and language
  • New tools for management, development and reporting
  • Changes for deployment, High Availability and Manageability
  • Working with "The Cloud"
  • Plenty more

Extended Events - A whirlwind tour!
1000 - Martin Catherall

Extended events (Xevents) were introduced to the product in SQL SERVER 2008. Consequently there is a lot of new terminology and techniques involved with them.

Find out how this new technology works and learn how to leverage their power to troubleshoot and learn more about the internal workings of SQL SERVER.

Xevents would appear to be the future of monitoring, so learning about them now would put you at an advantage.

This session will start with some basic terminology of Xevent sessions, as well as explain how to set up and use an extended event session. We’ll then move on to look at  examples of Xevents in action and hook into some practical uses for them.

Troubleshooting SQL Server with SysInternals Tools
1100 - Argenis Fernandez

In this demo-packed session we will explore the use of SysInternals tools like Process Monitor, Process Explorer, and many others to troubleshoot various problem scenarios with SQL Server.

This session is not for the faint of heart and is tailored toward those adventurous DBAs who often like to step out of their comfort zone. A fair knowledge of Windows OS internals is recommended

SQL 2012 Licensing 101
1300 - Corina Oliver

The SQL Server 2012 release will simplify customer options with three main editions that are closely aligned with how customers use SQL Server across workloads. SQL Server 2012 will also deliver licensing which enables customers to more easily take advantage of the benefits of public and private cloud through virtualization and license mobility.

Join this 100 level session to get an idea of what the new licensing model will be.

SQL Server Security Checklist
1330 - Michael Edmonds

This is a session discussing SQL Server security best practices. Some of these best practices may also be a best practice for performance and administration, but others of these best practices may cause performance to degrade and administration costs to escalate. It is left to you to decide which practices to implement based on all factors.

Secure, Enable, Maintain, Sustain.
1400 - Daniel Lewandowski

In depth discussion on a SSAS security framework with SSIS maintenance toolkits.

  • Create security roles in the cube that enable the business based on underlying data patterns.
  • Presentation covers creation of roles in the cube, with a demo creating SSIS roles with a toolkit based on the adventureworks db model and cube.
  • Using integrated security, service accounts and data sources in the presentation layers this we walk through a security model for end-to-end security as can be implemented in sharepoint integrated solutions and/or standalone reports. This presentation provides real world application and an SSIS toolkit to take away and implement in your solutions.

Powershell for beginners
1500 - Kent Chenery

You've seen that little blue icon in the taskbar of some of your servers and wondered what it did. May be you clicked it and thought "Oooh I like the white on blue but I’ve already got a white on black command prompt…why do I need this?” Some of your colleagues have been waxing lyrical about PowerShell but you've been too afraid to get your feet wet. Perhaps you looked up some stuff on Bingoogle and thought "What’s with all the curly braces, at symbols and percent signs? That’s just Perl for the 21st century right?” You've heard it’s got something to do with .Net but you're a DBA and that .Net thing is for developers - you don’t need that. You don’t like to admit it, but you’ve secretly envied your Linux and Oracle admin buddies who can use BASH shell scripting to do some really cool stuff and you wish Windows had something similar.

Any of that sound like you? Then this session might just be for you. We’ll try and take a look at what it can do and maybe open your eyes to some possibilities where it can make your day to day job a little bit easier.

Debugging the deadlock for the Scheduler
1600 - Amit Banerjee

This session will discuss the common scenarios under which a SQL Server instance reports a Deadlocked Schedulers condition. During the session, I shall show two different ways of analyzing the root cause of a Deadlocked Schedulers condition:

  1. By debugging a memory dump using WinDbg
  2. By collecting data using DMVs through a DAC session

Session Goals:

  1. Gain an understanding of deadlocked schedulers condition
  2. Understand how to troubleshoot deadlocked schedulers situation
    1. Live troubleshooting: while the issue is occurring
    2. Post-mortem analysis: Using data collected by default for such a situation

The following sessions have been deferred to future User Group and Live Meetings...

  • Developing Ad-Hoc queries and reports for reusablity
  •  Identifying when SQL isn't the right solution
  •  Data Mining: Looking for the nuggests
  •  SQL Server Security Checklist
  •  Developing Distributed applications using SQL Azure
  •  BI vs Developers vs DBAs
  •  Anatomy of a Join
  •  Indexes: What, Why and When?
  •  Empowering the users: Self Service BI Reporting
